Ledger won Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight," and his mother, father and sister gave a truly heartfelt acceptance speech on his behalf.

His father Kim Ledger said, "I have to say this is ever so humbling," thanking director Christopher Nolan for "allowing Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character."

Heath’s mother Sally Bell said, "Heath was such a compassionate and generous soul. We have been truly overwhelmed by the honor and respect bestowed upon him with this award."

His sister Kate added that she wished her brother could be present to savor the moment. Truly, this is one of the best acceptance speeches I’ve ever heard, because it came straight from the heart.

"The Dark Knight" sequel is on hold, but it’s not because Christian Bale is behaving badly.

It’s because director Chris Nolan is working on a new movie, "Inception," described as a sci-fi action thriller with a psych twist.

I don’t know that we’ve even heard if Nolan is directing another Batman movie, have we? I’m sure the pressure to produce another blockbuster would be pretty high.

Until then, I’ll look forward to seeing what he does with "Inception," likely hitting theaters in summer 2010.

"It’s been a miserable week for me," Bale said on The Kevin & Bean Show on KROQ-FM in Los Angeles yesterday. “I was out of order, beyond belief. I acted like a punk. I regret that … It is inexcusable."

Bale adds: "Please, I am asking people, do not allow my onetime lapse in judgment, my incredibly embarrassing meltdown, to overshadow this movie … I ask everybody to sit down and ask themselves, ‘Have they ever had a bad day and ever lost their temper and really regretted it immensely?’"

Uh, no. Not like that. At this point, I’m still calling Christian Bale a loser. What say you, Geckos?

Danny Boyle wins outstanding directorial achievement in feature film for "Slumdog Millionaire," Director’s Guild of America. It’s the runaway hit of the season, and I’m sure this little flick will score big at the Oscars, too. In his acceptance speech, Boyle said, "Dream hard."

"Kung Fu Panda" wins best animated feature, Annie Awards. In fact, it picked up ten awards, which seems surprising to me, given that one of the other nominees was "Wall-E." 

Vikas Swarup and Simon Beaufoy win a Scripter Award for "Slumdog Millionaire." Wow, what a group of nominees, though, including "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The Reader," and "Revolutionary Road." I’m glad I don’t have to pick the best out of these great screenplays.

"Slumdog Millionaire" wins outstanding movie cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Heath Ledger wins best supporting actor for "The Dark Knight," which also took home the award for film stunt ensembles at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

"Slumdog Millionaire" earns a best picture award from the Producers Guild of America.

"Wall-E" wins best picture of the year from the Online Film Critics Society, while "The Dark Knight" picks up four awards, including director (Chris Nolan), best supporting actor (Heath Ledger), cinematography (Wally Pfister), and original score (James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer).

Maggie Gyllenhaal (pictured) noted on the red carpet that while it’s hard to talk about her friend Ledger, she feels that he’s very deserving of the award.

Presenter Demi Moore presented a brief clip of Ledger’s work in the film and afterwards, "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan accepted Ledger’s posthumous award, doing so with "a mixture of sadness and incredible pride."

Rather than dwelling on the gap left by Ledger’s death, Nolan said he preferred to concentrate on "the incredible place in the history of world cinema he built for himself."

Also emotional was Sally Hawkins, named Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role as a North London schoolteacher in "Happy-Go-Lucky." As Hawkins choked up on stage, Emma Thompson offered her support from the audience. Thompson, Meryl Streep, and Frances McDormand were also nominated in the category.

The Jonas Brothers presented the Best Animated Feature category, won by "Wall*E." Excellent news on that front. Loved that movie.

Jennifer Lopez kicked off the show by presenting the night’s first award. "Hello! Mama talking! Mama talking!" she said, trying to quiet the crowd so she could read the nominees’ names. She then announced the first winner, Kate Winslet, as Best Supporting Actress for "The Reader." Clutching her trophy and unwrapping a sheet of paper, Winslet apologized for her long speech, saying, "I have a habit of not winning."

She also apologized to her husband, "Revolutionary Road" director Sam Mendes, noting, "I’m sorry I was so mental at the end."

Bruce Springsteen won for Best Song from "The Wrestler," laughing that "this is the only time I’ll be in competition with Clint Eastwood. It felt pretty good too."

Anna Pacquin won for her role as Sookie Stackhouse in HBO’s "True Blood" (yay!), while Gabriel Byrne won as Best Actor for his starring role on the same network’s "In Therapy."
