New Barbarella in the works!
August 7, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
When I was a kid, I remember my parents going to see "Barbarella," and coming home all mysterious about what the movie was about.
In case you weren’t around in 1968, the sci-fi action-adventure centers on a female mercenary (played by Jane Fonda) who roams the universe of a distant future, taking on missions requiring bravery, creativity, and sensuality. It was all very sexy.
Now a remake is in the works! Joe Gazzam is writing the screenplay, with original producer Dino De Laurentiis and his wife, Martha De Laurentiis on board to produce the update.
Originally, Robert Rodriguez was eyeing …read more
Peter Jackson talks District 9
August 5, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
There’s been some interesting promotions for “District 9” lately, and one is a contest held by IGN.com. The site recently sent two contest winners to Comic-Con to interview producer Peter Jackson, director Neill Blomkamp (a Jackson protege), and actor Sharlto Copley about the movie.
It’s a gritty sci-fi story that involves post-war apocalypse, barbed-wire enclosures, and exhausted alien refugees whose spaceship runs out of gas. Sounds fun, huh?! Hollywood Reporter has a great review of the film here. It hits theaters Aug. 14, 2009.
Review: Moon (a sci-fi not unlike 2001: A Space Odyssey)
July 19, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Movie: Moon * Official Site
In Theaters: June 12, 2009 (limited)
Runtime: 97 minutes
Directed by: Duncan Jones
MPAA Rating: R for language
Gecko Rating:
I haven’t heard much about “Moon,” but it’s been on the film festival circuit this year and won Best New British Feature at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It features Sam Rockwell (pictured) in the lead, so that was enough to make me go see it at our restored downtown State Theater here in Traverse City, Michigan.
I took my budding filmmaker almost-15-year-old son. Even though it’s rated R, it’s mainly for language, which he and I are …read more
Moon’s Duncan Jones at the Tribeca Film Festival
June 14, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
The film "Moon" is out in limited release this week, but has been on the film festival circuit since January. Just the title alone wouldn’t make me go see this movie, but after reading more about it and watching clips, I’m definitely interested. If I don’t see it beforehand, maybe it’ll play at the Traverse City Film Festival in August.
It’s directed and written by Duncan Jones, son of the legendary David Bowie, and follows an astronaut (Sam Rockwell) who pursues his own departure from a futuristic lunar mining base. "Moon" is rated R for language, and also stars Kevin …read more
Terminator Salvation Review – Explosive Mix of Old and New
May 23, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Movie: Terminator Salvation * Trailer * 53 Images * Official Site
In Theaters: May 21, 2009
Runtime: 130 minutes
Directed by: McG
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and language.
Gecko Rating:
I love sequels that bring in lots of references from the preceding movies. “Terminator Salvation” does that, especially from the very first movie, “The Terminator.”
You remember the story: Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor meets Kyle Reese, who was sent back from the future to keep her safe from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s big, bad Terminator. In the process, Sarah and Kyle grow close, and she gets pregnant with John …read more
Terminator Salvation Videos: Moon Bloodgood, Christian Bale, and Animatronics
May 20, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
“Terminator Salvation” hits theaters Thursday, May 21, 2009 (today!). And it’s definitely one of the most anticipated movies of 2009. HitFix.com has a bunch of cool videos of interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff. I’ve included a few below. I always expect Christian Bale to haul off and hit someone. That’s bad typecasting on my part, but you’ve gotta admit, he does seem pretty intense. Are you super-psyched for this movie?

Gerard Butler’s Gamer – Official Trailer
May 12, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
What if video games merged with real life? With a teen and a tween in the house, I sort of feel like that describes my life. But this movie – "Gamer" – is way darker than my household.
It’s a sci-fi action flick starring Gerard Butler ("300"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"), and Milo Ventimiglia ("Heroes"). Directed by "Crank" and "Crank: High Voltage" helmers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the story is set in a futuristic world where humans can control other humans like an online game.
Rated R for frenetic sequences of strong brutal violence throughout, sexual content, nudity and …read more

Christian Bale forced rewrite of Terminator Salvation
May 10, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Well, geez, talk about being too big for your britches. Apparently, when director McG (a.k.a. Joseph McGinty Nichol) went to England to convince Christian Bale to play Marcus Wright in "Terminator Salvation," the actor said he wanted to play John Connor instead.
While Connor was the main character in the first three "Terminator" movies, he was only supposed to have a small part in the fourth "Terminator" film, due in theaters May 21, 2009 (watch the trailer here). Instead, Connor became a central character. McG says the script became a "moving target," and he worked extensively with Bale to …read more
