But some also say the year will signal a spiritual awakening, so maybe it’s not all bad. Check out Armageddon Online for more theories.

But some also say the year will signal a spiritual awakening, so maybe it’s not all bad. Check out Armageddon Online for more theories.

In the movie “2012,” the focus is on a series of catastrophic natural disasters that center on a shift and destabilization of the earth’s core. Thus we’ve got earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and just about every other sort of disaster you can think of.

More after the jump…

The central character is Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), an author who’s written a book about Atlantis but works as a driver for a Russian diplomat, Yuri Karpov (Zlatko Buric). Now divorced, Jackson is disconnected from his two kids (Liam James and Morgan Lily), and decides to take them on a camping trip to Yellowstone. Meanwhile, his ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet) and her new husband Gordon (Tom McCarthy) stay behind in their happy suburban home.

But, of course, things start coming apart. California starts experiencing little earthquakes, and Jackson and the kids see some odd happenings during their Yellowstone camping trip, too. They also meet a crazy mountain man, Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson, whose perfectly cast in that role), who broadcasts a radio show, warning everyone that the end is near.

Meanwhile, the politicians are gearing up in Washington, D.C. and around the globe, including U.S. President Thomas Wilson (Danny Glover), his daughter Laura (Thandie Newton), and a geologist, Adrian (Chiwetel Ejiofor). They’re aware of the earth shifts and have a plan of their own. When Jackson catches wind of the plan from Charlie, he does everything in his power to get his family — including Gordon — to safety.

A lot of the dialogue in this movie is downright corny, but the special effects make up for it. You have to just sit back and enjoy the disaster ride that includes giant cracks that open up in the earth and threaten to swallow whole stores, skyscrapers toppling into each other, massive pieces of land sliding into the earth (cities and all), and sweeping tsunamis taking out entire continents, including a monk’s retreat on a mountaintop. And it’s all done really well.

But you also have to snort in disbelief at some of the outrageous things that would never happen, should a real disaster of this type occur. Like planes taking off on rubbled runways, then landing in a remote mountain area near exactly where the travelers were headed.

Still, as far as disaster movies go, this is a fun one. If you like this sort of thing, you should definitely check it out. At 158 minutes, though, it’s long, so be prepared for lots of disaster.

NOTE TO PARENTS: While I wouldn’t call “2012” a family movie, it definitely has some family elements to it. Even though Jackson feel disconnected to his kids and ex-wife, they work together during the disaster and realize they need each other.

The PG-13 rating seems on target for this movie. There are plenty of disaster scenes and people in peril, but you don’t see too many close-up shots of dead people or anything, and the movie isn’t “real” enough to warrant any major emotional upheaval in kids 13 and older.

I’m sort of hot and cold on Hilary Swank. There’s no doubt that she’s a great actress – she’s won two Oscars, after all (for “Million Dollar Baby” and “Boys Don’t Cry”). But there’s something about her that’s just a little annoying. I almost hesitate to say it, but she seemed to be over-acting in her portrayal of Amelia Earhart. I just wanted her to snap out of it and be a real person on the screen – not a caricature of a historical figure. There, I’ve said it.

Most of us know the story of Amelia Earhart, the legendary pilot who brought flying into the realm of women, and who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937, while attempting to fly around the world with her navigator, Fred Noonan (Christopher Eccleston). They were supposed to re-fuel on Howland Island, a tiny speck of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but while trying to make radio contact with a ship, their connection was lost and they were never seen again.

More after the jump…

That was the best scene of the movie, because you really get the whole impact of that lost radio contact – both Amelia and Fred realize that this is the end for them. We don’t actually see them fly into the ocean, but you know it happens.

Prior to this fateful flight, Amelia fell in love with and married publisher George Putnam (Richard Gere), who helped her create the hype over “Lady Lindy,” as well as an advertising campaign (selling an “Amelia Earhart” luggage and clothing line, among others) and lecture circuit to help fund her flying. She wasn’t happy with it, but she knew it was necessary to keep her in the skies. She loved the freedom of flying.

But Earhart also had an affair – with fellow pilot Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor) whose son Gore Vidal grew up to be an icon himself.

The film includes shots here and there of archival footage of the real Amelia Earhart, and with her thin frame and tousled hair, Swank closely resembles the famed aviatrix. I have no idea what the real Earhart sounded like, but both my 12-year-old daughter and I were ultra-annoyed with how Swank talked – like she had cotton in her mouth. I don’t know – maybe that’s how the real woman sounded. The film also portrays her as a women with a gentle soul and the heart of a poet. I hope that’s how she was in real life, because it adds to her mystique.

“Amelia” isn’t a bad movie, and it’s clear that Earhart helped women make great strides in not only aviation, but other areas of their lives, too. The movie is also visually stunning, with sweeping views of land across the globe, as seen from the cockpit of an airplane.

Still, the movie leaves something to be desired and will most likely appeal to people who are interested in aviation or the life of Earhart. At the very least, it will make you want to search further to find out more about her.

“The Invention of Lying” is a sweet little movie – not particularly funny, but sweet with a nice message: we need to look beyond the surface of people to see what they’re really like inside.
It stars Ricky Gervais, the award-winning creator and star of the original BBC series "The Office" and HBO’s "Extras," as Mark, a down-on-his-luck loser who lives in an alternate reality [...]
Post from: Film Gecko

Everyone –from politicians to advertisers to regular joes — speaks the truth.

I often dream about this concept, where we could just say what’s on our minds without thinking about the consequences, but of course, it has its downfalls. For one thing, people can be horribly hurt when you just come out and say what you think of them.

When Mark snags a date with Anna (Jennifer Garner), she has no problem telling her mom on the phone exactly what she thinks of him – he’s short and snub-nosed and there’s no way she’s going to sleep with him, not now or ever. Keep in mind that Mark is sitting across the table from her.

If that’s not depressing enough, Mark loses his job writing screenplays for the “Lecture Film” company, because his era is the 1300’s and the only thing that ever happened during this time is awful stuff like the Black Plague.

The trailer made it seem like “The Invention of Lying” would be funny, but it’s really more of a thoughtful, philosophical film. Like what happens after we die? What role does faith play in our lives? How important is it to be kind to others? And if NOT saying what you really feel is lying, then some of us need to do more of that, out of respect for others’ feelings.

In supporting roles are Jonah Hill as Frank, Mark’s suicidal neighbor; Louis C.K. as Greg, another loser type whom Mark befriends; Jeffrey Tambor as Anthony, Mark’s boss who’s tasked with the job of firing him, even though he doesn’t want to; Rob Lowe as Brad, a co-worker who’s riding through life on his good lucks and breeding genes; and Tina Fey as Mark’s secretary. It seems like a funny little role for Fey, as she’s so big in TV and films, but whatever. She does a good job with it, as do all of the supporting players.

If you’re a fan of Ricky Gervais or any of the other players, this movie is worth a look. I saw it with my 12-year-old daughter, and while there’s a bit of sex talk here and there, it’s nowhere near as suggestive as many PG-13 movies. I’d say it’s ok for kids 12 and up.

Movie: 9 * Trailer * Official Site
In Theaters: Sept. 9, 2009

Runtime: 79 minutes
Directed by: Shane Acker; produced by Tim Burton

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for violence and scary images
Gecko Rating:

I’d like to crack Tim Burton and Shane Acker’s heads open sometime (hypothetically speaking) and peek inside to see where they get all of their ideas.
This is Acker’s first major film as a director and writer, although he’s done some shorts – including the 2005 Oscar-nominated short on which this movie is based. He was also an animator on “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

He was also an animator on “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

Tim Burton, of course, is the genius behind “Corpse Bride,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and “Edward Scissorhands,” among others. Together, they make magic with “9,” a darkly beautiful film with an inspiring message of hope and perseverance.

The story follows a group of small, ragdoll-type creatures created by a forward-thinking scientist who knew the end of the world was nigh. He made the creatures, numbered from “1” to “9,” to carry on after mankind is wiped out after a battle with robotic machines.

It begins with “9” (voiced by Elijah Wood) waking up in a dusty, abandoned room (with someone lying on the floor) and looking out on a post-apocalyptic world. The buildings are piles of rubble and the streets are littered with the remains of humanity (scattered toys, vehicles and even a few bodies, though brief).

Upon seeing another creature like himself on the street below, “9” makes his way down to the street and follows the creature, “2” (voiced by Martin Landau), who eventually gets caught by a mechanical beast.

“9” soon learns that there are others like him, holed up in a building with “1” (Christopher Plummer) calling the shots. Others in the group include fiercely brave “7” (Jennifer Connelly), shy artist “6” (Crispin Glover), skittish “5” (John C. Reilly), and young twins “3” and “4”. Part of the group wants to find and kill the murderous machine and save “2,” while the others wish to hide from it. After “9” inadvertently fires up a much larger machine, the group has no choice but to destroy it.

Although it’s an animated film, this is not for kids younger than 13. It’s dark and disturbing, but it’s also beautiful and hopeful. The animation is amazingly detailed, from the zippers and stitches on the creatures to the dusty stained glass window in an abandoned cathedral. And the reason this movie is hopeful, despite the chaos, is because the creatures have souls and some of them are really resourceful, determined, creative, and caring. “9” is in the “never leave anyone behind” camp.

At just 79 minutes, the story flows along nicely and is never boring. For kids 13 and older, this is a great film and a must-see for Acker/Burton fans.

NOTE TO PARENTS: Though it’s animated and filled with interesting creatures, make no mistake that “9” is not for little ones. This movie contains a lot of violence and disturbing images, including intense battles and chase scenes between the ragdoll creatures and robotic machines; characters getting the life force sucked out of them; brief images of dead humans (including a child) in a post-apocalyptic world of rubble and chaos; and a machine being beheaded. Weapons include spears, guns and chemical bombs (some of these are shown in flashback scenes). While it may not be for young kids, “9” is still a darkly beautiful film with a message of hope for older teens and adults.

"Post Grad" is one of those movies that’s fun while you’re watching it, but you probably won’t remember it the next day. Or even 10 minutes after you leave the theater.

It stars the adorable Alexis Bledel as Ryden Malby, a girl who’s just graduated from college and is ready to go out and conquer the world. Or at least her own little corner of it.

Ever since she was a little girl, Ryden has had a plan: get good grades in school, graduate from college with honors, and get her dream job at a prestigious publishing company. She’s done the first two, but getting the job? Not going as planned.

So Ryden moves back home with her family, which includes dad Walter (Michael Keaton), mom Carmella (Jane Lynch), little brother Hunter (Bobby Coleman), and grandma Maureen (Carol Burnett).

Meanwhile, her best friend since childhood, Adam (Zach Gilford, who plays Matt Saracen on "Friday Night Lights"), has been harboring a serious crush on her forever, only Ryden just sees him as a friend. She’s much more interested in the hot Brazilian guy next door, David Santiago (Rodrigo Santoro), who actually helps her land a tie-over job as an assistant where he works, directing infomercials. He’s not so happy with his job either, though.

The strong part of this movie is Alexis Bledel. She’s sweet, funny, and cute. She could handle a leading role if the rest of the movie was good, but this one just isn’t. I love all of the actors, and it’s nice to see Michael Keaton in a movie again. But the characters are somewhat one-dimensional.

Keaton plays kind of a kooky dad who’s always looking for that next big thing; Jane Lynch seems like she did this role in her off-hours while writing her grocery list; Carol Burnett is the also-kooky grandmother who decides she needs to pick out a casket now; Zach Gilford is the sweet and adoring guy-next-door who never gets the girl; and so on and so forth.

You get the drift. There’s really nothing new here, and Bledel’s character isn’t strong enough to carry the movie on her own. Still, it does have a good message about the importance of family and following your dreams, even if those dreams change over time and you need to be conked over the head to figure that out.

Ivan Reitman is the producer, which is surprising because most of his recent projects have fared better, including "Disturbia" and "I Love You, Man." By the way, his daughter, Catherine Reitman, plays Bledel’s college rival, Jessica.

Remember when family movies used to be good? I can’t even think of a great family movie in recent months or even years. Ok, the "Harry Potter" movies and a stand-out here and there, like "Up" or "Kung Fu Panda." But most family movies fall in the mediocre category, the kind you either forget about the next day or don’t even see at all.

Such is the case with "Aliens in the Attic," an ok movie, in general, but nothing that makes you go home and call your friends and tell them to get to the movie theater right now! Sometimes you get the feeling some of these movies are made solely to create little creatures that can be sold in the kids’ meals at Burger King.

The story centers around a vacationing family that includes parents Stuart and Nina Pearson (Kevin Nealon and Gillian Vigman), Uncle Nathan (Andy Richter), grandma Rose (Doris Roberts), and kids Tom (Carter Jenkins), Bethany (Ashley Tisdale), Jake (Austin Butler), Hannah (Ashley Boettcher), and twins Art and Lee (Henri Young and Regan Young).

Before I go any further, I must give a shout-out to Carter Jenkins. I’ve been a fan of his since his roles in the short-lived TV shows "Surface" and "Viva Laughlin." He’s growing up now, but showed his acting chops early on with those roles. And I hope he gets better roles than this movie!

So the family goes on vacation to an old cottage in the country, and not long after they arrive, the kids discover some other visitors living in the attic – aliens. Apparently, they’ve come to earth to take over the planet or some such thing. The usual storyline involving aliens. Only they really aren’t that organized, and there’s a toddler alien who makes friends with the youngest Pearson kid, Hannah.

I saw this movie with my 12-year-old daughter, and while we both agreed the little alien was cute, the movie as a whole didn’t make it for us. The characters are one dimensional and stereotypical – brainy kid, ditzy teen, sweet little one, twins tied to their hand-held games.

And it’s hard for me to see Kevin Nealon as the dad in a family movie when I’m used to seeing him as the slacker pothead on "Weeds." It really wasn’t great casting, in my mind. Doris Roberts is fine as the grandma, and gets to do some fun stunts when the aliens inject an energy wave into her that causes her to be remote controlled by a device. Same goes for Bethany’s dumb athlete boyfriend, Ricky (Robert Hoffman). Again with the stereotypes.

I guess this wouldn’t be a bad movie to see on DVD, if you didn’t have anything else going on that day. And I did think the old house was pretty cool.

Jeff Daniels is one of those versatile actors who can do any role and do it well. Comedy, drama, musical, quirky, sad, romantic — you name it, he does it. In “The Answer Man,” he gets to do several of those things all in the same movie.

He plays Arlen Faber, a self-help guru who’s written scores of books on the “Me and God” brand during the past 20 years. But Arlen is crotchety and cynical, and basically just wants to be left alone from the millions of fans he has worldwide. That’s why he never does any public readings or reveals his true identity to anyone. Only his agent Terry Fraser (Nora Dunn) knows his true identity. Not even the mailman (Tony Hale) has a clue that the guy he’s delivering mail to all these years is the one and only Arlen Faber.

But things start to change when Arlen has a sudden back spasm that lays him out on the floor. Receiving no help from his disgruntled agent, he finally crawls out the door and down the street to the nearest chiropractic clinic, newly opened by overprotective single mom Elizabeth (Lauren Graham) who straps her young son Alex (Max Antisell) into his car seat like he’s heading for the moon.

This movie has some very funny moments, like Arlen’s record player playing the same tune over and over as he lies paralyzed on the floor. But also some tragedy, too. Like the local bookstore / trader owner, Kris (Lou Taylor Pucci) who just got out of rehab and talks Arlen into giving him free advice, then Arlen can give him five books for each question. Even HE doesn’t believe his own crap. He just wants the books out of his house. But Kris is near financial ruin and can’t afford to pay for the books.

Lauren Graham always has this girl-next-door quality, like someone you’d like to be friends with. She does that in this movie, too. And the pairing of her and Daniels – their characters become romantically entangled – works on several levels. He needs her to get out in the world. She needs him because he’s surprisingly good with her son. And they genuinely like each other. They just need to get over themselves to make a go of it.

If you like quirky, romantic, heartfelt, funny movies, then check out “The Answer Man.” It’s much more than a romantic comedy or dramedy or whatever you want to call it. This is one movie that defies being categorized, and is all the better for it.

One thing I love about Harry Potter movies is that they appeal to all age groups. We saw "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" last night, and the people in the theater spanned at least eight decades, kids from 8 to 80.
One thing I love about Harry Potter movies is that they appeal to all age groups. We saw "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" last night, and the people in the theater spanned at least eight decades, kids from 8 to 80. Aside from that, it’s just a really great production with beautiful cinematography, stunning locations, and thoughtful performances. And oh yeah, a fantastic storyline that hooks you from beginning to end, even if you’ve never read the books by J.K. Rowling. My only complaint is that at 153 minutes, it’s a little long. But I’ll forgive that one thing, and not even mark it down.

We catch up with Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his pals Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) well on their way to young adulthood. Along with the spells, wands, and broomsticks, we’ve got three kids dealing with hormones and young love (and lust!). It’s been fun watching them grow up on screen, and like seeing old friends again in this latest installment.

Harry, once a confused young wizard, has grown into a charismatic young man ready to face down evil with a vengeance. He also has a thing for young Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright). Ron is much more than comic relief now, though we still get some of that, thank goodness. And Hermione, who began as a stern young student only interested in obeying the rules and scoring high on tests, is now a lovely young woman with a certain wizard on her mind -– a wizard who’s too dense to see the truth, thus causing Hermione much heartache.

Along with the teenage angst, we have the magical storylines that audiences will undoubtedly eat up with glee. The evil Death Eaters are attacking the Muggle world, and Harry and pals are headed back to Hogwarts. Harry comes into possession of an ancient Potions textbook with all sorts of helpful notes written in the margins and text. It once belonged to "The Half-Blood Prince," as noted in the front of the book.

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambone) takes Harry further into his confidence and shows him some memories involving a creepy young Tom Riddle (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin at age 11; Frank Dillane at age 16), whom we know grows up to be the darkest wizard of all, Lord Voldemort.

Dumbledore also asks Harry to befriend the school’s new professor, Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), who holds a particular memory that’s key to saving the world as they know it. The loyalty of Professor Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) continues to be in question, and he finally shows his true colors. And Harry’s arch-nemesis Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) is more than just a bad, bad boy. He’s truly a tortured soul, torn between good and evil. A tragic figure, really.

Helena Bonham Carter’s Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange is deliciously evil, with her mass of wild hair and dark shenanigans. I’d say she’s soul-less, but she definitely has a soul. It’s just very, very dark.

We also get a good amount of visually fun scenes with stunning special effects: a visit to the elder Weasley boys’ magic shop; a trip to a dark cavern where Harry and Dumbledore fend off Gollum-like creatures creeping out of the murky water; an attack on our friends by Death Eaters in an earthy field of windswept wheat; a wild and wooly game of Quiddich; and plenty of beautiful shots of spires and staircases and dark alleys.

All of this is intermixed with slower-paced scenes of the characters talking things out, and that’s ok. We see that they’re maturing and growing, and their lives involve more than just magical hijinks.

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is my favorite movie in the series so far, and I can’t wait to see the battle between good and evil play out in the final two movies. Two installments of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" are scheduled for release in 2010 and 2011.

They’ve really mined everything they can out of these "Ice Age" movies, haven’t they? That’s not to say they’re not cute and fun and all that stuff. Just that maybe they’ve come to the end of the line on these particular characters and stories.
They’ve really mined everything they can out of these "Ice Age" movies, haven’t they? That’s not to say they’re not cute and fun and all that stuff. Just that maybe they’ve come to the end of the line on these particular characters and stories. Then again, they’ve added a few new characters in this movie, and let’s face it, they’re just at the dawn of the dinosaurs, which means this franchise could go on into infinity.

The first movie, 2002’s "Ice Age," was definitely the best. The second, 2006’s "Ice Age: The Meltdown," was cute, and this one is cute, too. They just seem to be losing their steam. But the animation continues to be fantastic, with every snowflake and furry animal popping off the screen at you (the 3D animation helps, too).

This third movie finds Manny (Ray Romano) and Ellie (Queen Latifah) preparing to have a baby Mammoth. Manny is nesting big-time, creating a beautiful little playground full of ice-figure mobiles, play structures, and teeter-totters.

It leaves Sid (John Leguizamo) wishing for a family of his own, and he gets just that when he stumbles upon a trio of large eggs. He doesn’t realize they’re dinosaur eggs, and their mom wants them back.

Diego (Denis Leary) has his own issues. With all this family planning going on, he feels like he’s losing his touch in the wild. He can’t even chase after a nimble gazelle without gasping for breath.

When Sid accidentally falls into a strange underground world full of lush tropical foliage and creatures of every shape and size, the rest of the gang heads down to try and rescue him. They get some help from a one-eyed weasel named Buck (Simon Pegg) who’s like an animal version of Crocodile Dundee.

The journey puts the group in grave danger, especially Ellie, who’s just about ready to have that baby Mammoth.

Of course, we can’t forget Scrat (Chris Wedge), who’s still on the hunt to grab and hold onto that elusive acorn. But that dream is seriously hindered by the appearance of a female sabre-toothed squirrel named Scratte.

This movie is cute as all get-out, and the storyline moves along fairly well. But there’s not a lot of new ground here (well, aside from the lush new ground beneath the ice floes). It probably could have gone straight to DVD, but if you have kids in the 5- to 8-year-old range who like cute, animated movies, this is a good choice.

NOTE TO PARENTS: The violence is mainly cartoonish, with Scrat’s quest to get the acorn and a few close calls from other characters (a gazelle being chased, but not caught and eaten). Some of the dinosaurs are pretty scary, but for the most part, they don’t inflict any real damage on any characters. Sexual innuendoes are limited to Scrat and his new love interest, as well as Manny and Ellie acting sweet towards each other. In one scene, Sid tries to milk an animal that turns out to be male, and in another scene, he thinks a baby mammoth is a boy until Diego says, "That’s a tail." Language includes mild insults, usually directed at Sid, as well as "poop" and "barf."
