‘The Hurt Locker’ picks up Critics’ Choice Award for Best Picture
January 16, 2010 by Jane Boursaw
Kathryn Bigelow is having a great year so far. For that matter, Summit Entertainment is having a great couple of years. They’re like the little movie studio that could.
At the Critics’ Choice Awards on Friday, Bigelow was named best director, and her film, the Iraq war drama “The Hurt Locker” from Summit, nabbed a best picture award.
Prelude to the Golden Globes and Oscars? We’ll know soon, as the Golden Globes airs tomorrow night.
“Crazy Heart” was a double winner, with Jeff Bridges claiming the best actor prize for his turn as hard-drinking country singer Bad Blake. The film’s theme …read more
Fox thrilled with All About Steve box office numbers
September 6, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Labor Day is never a good weekend to release a movie, and the top two movies brought in the usual small numbers. “The Final Destination” grossed $12.4 million, while “All About Steve” brought in $11.2 million.
Here’s the thing, though. Apparently, Fox is still pretty happy with those “All About Steve” numbers. According to Yahoo Movies, some Fox official said they were "thrilled with that number.” Apparently, they were expecting a lot less.
I expected more from the movie, awarding it only 2.5 out of 5 Geckos. It was interesting, but the trailer made it seem like it’d be …read more

Brad and Angie looked fabulous, as always, and it’s nice to see that Sarah Silverman got dressed up for the occasion, isn’t it? The movie hits theaters August 21, 2009.
White Ribbon wins at Cannes
May 24, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
I imagine I’ll be seeing some of the Cannes films at the Traverse City Film Festival in August. Until then, I’m reveling in hearing about the films and people involved in Cannes’ 12-day run, which ended tonight.
“The White Ribbon” scored the coveted Palme d’Or, the festival’s top honor. Jury president Isabelle Huppert presented Michael Haneke with the prize at the closing-night ceremony held in the Palais des Festivals.
It’s the first time a jury president has presented the award since Clint Eastwood gave the award to Quentin Tarantino for "Pulp Fiction."
Grabbing the Grand Prix award was Jacques Audiard’s …read more

Inglourious Basterds – New footage shown on American Idol
April 15, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Well, it all makes sense to me now. When I heard that Quentin Tarantino was the guest mentor on "American Idol" this week, I went, what the…? But of course, it was all designed to publicize new footage from his upcoming film "Inglourious Basterds," in theaters Aug. 21, 2009.
The clip shows some behind-the-scenes stuff, followed by a montage featuring Brad Pitt and our first look at Mike Myers in character. Pitt plays Lt. Aldo Raine, who’s in charge of eight Jewish-American soldiers tasked with invading France and killing Nazis occupying the area. I haven’t been that excited about this …read more
Brad Pitt in "Inglourious Basterds" Trailer
February 11, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
The trailer for "Inglourious Basterds" was just released, and it looks intense. At least with Quentin Tarantino on board as writer and director, it’s sure to be more intense than, I don’t know, Tom Cruise’s "Valkyrie." And much bloodier, too.
I’m not a huge fan of Brad Pitt’s acting, but let’s hope he does something besides just play himself like he usually does. He plays Lt. Aldo Raine, who’s in charge of eight Jewish-American soldiers tasked with invading France and killing Nazis occupying the area.
"The Basterds," as they’re known, have one job: screw up the German war machine. "Inglourious …read more
"Inglourious Basterds" Gets a Release Date
January 3, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
I always have trouble writing "Inglourious Basterds," because I just want to fix the typos. But I can’t, because that’s the official movie title. Anyway, the movie has a release date: Aug. 21, 2009.
Director Quentin Tarantino’s take on World War II stars Brad Pitt as a U.S. army lieutenant leading a group of soldiers operating behind Nazi lines. We’re certainly getting a lot of wars movies lately, aren’t we? "Valkyrie" "Defiance," and "Good," to name three.
Word has it that "Inglourious Basterds" takes a page from the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s and ’70s, in that it combines …read more
