Angelina Jolie visits Iraqi refugee camp

Celebrities don’t have to do good things with their fame, but Angelina Jolie uses her celebrity status for good in the world. As the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency, she’s been visiting with Iraqi children in a refugee camp near Damascus, Syria.

Jolie and Brad Pitt are in Syria visiting refugees which total 1.2 million in the country. Here’s my little part to draw attention to this humanitarian crisis: a photo of the star playing with Iraqi children…

Is Warners jumping the gun with a Sherlock Holmes sequel?

The release of “Sherlock Holmes” is still three months away (it hits theaters Dec. 25, 2009 – I know what our traditional family Christmas movie will be this year!), but a sequel is already in the works.

I guess they’re expecting gigantic box office numbers, and I hope they’re right. Footage of the film played well at Comic-Con, so maybe they’re banking on that.

In the new pic, Brad Pitt is in talks to star as Holmes’ nemesis Moriarty, and Warner Brothers is set to bring on Kieran and Michele Mulroney to pen the draft. They’re the writers behind “Justice League: Mortal.”

Susan Downey, Dan Lin and Joel Silver produced "Holmes," with Guy Ritchie directing. Robert Downey, Jr. plays the title character, with Jude Law as his protege Watson, and Rachel McAdams as his love interest Irene Adler.

It’s more common these days for a studio to develop sequels ahead of the first film’s release, to get the second one into production as fast as possible. Warners also began work on a sequel to “The Hangover” before the first film premiered — though nothing was set in stone until the box office numbers were in.

Any thoughts on this? Are they jumping the gun with a Sherlock Holmes sequel?

Brad and Angelina at the Inglourious Basterds premiere

Last week, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, among others, attended the Los Angeles premiere of "Inglorious Basterds" at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Brad and Angie looked fabulous, as always, and it’s nice to see that Sarah Silverman got dressed up for the occasion, isn’t it? The movie hits theaters August 21, 2009.

Sorkin brought in to scribe Moneyball

The baseball drama “Moneyball” has gone through several changes since its inception. The latest is Aaron Sorkin being brought in to draft a new version of the flick by next month, drawing on Steve Zaillian’s earlier take.

Brad Pitt remains on board to star, but Steven Soderbergh is out as director and writer. Based on Michael Lewis’ bestselling book, the story follows the Oakland A’s and their unorthodox approach to evaluating talent.

There’s no doubt that Sorkin is a talented writer. He recently completed “The Social Network” (a.k.a. the Facebook movie), and also penned 1992’s “A Few Good Men” and ABC’s “Sports Night” for ABC a decade ago.

Columbia pulls plug on Brad Pitt’s Moneyball

I bet Steven Soderbergh had a HECK of a weekend. It must be crazy nerve-wracking to have a studio balk at a movie project just days away from the start of filming.

That’s what happened with “Moneyball” a baseball drama being directed by Soderbergh and starring Brad Pitt (pictured, at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in May 2009).

The cast and crew were prepped to start shooting this week, but Columbia pulled the plug; co-chair Amy Pascal says she wasn’t comfortable with the script, which has changed a lot since the project was greenlit.

You have to wonder just what major changes were made to the script that Columbia would shut it down. The screenplay, adapted from Michael Lewis’ nonfiction book, follows the Oakland Athletics and their general manager Billy Beane, who assembled a contending ballclub despite a payroll much lower than most teams.

Pitt and comedian Demetri Martin had been cast, with other roles going to actual baseball players David Justice, Darryl Strawberry, Lenny Dykstra and others.

So what will happen now? Over the weekend, Soderbergh shopped the project to Warner Bros. and Paramount. If neither bites, it could go back to Columbia with some major overhauls.

Depending on which tabloid you’re reading, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are either pregnant, breaking up, living in separate houses, or locked in a bitter custody battle. This report says that Angie offered Brad $90 million for the kids. Believe it?

Does Angelina Jolie know how to make an entrance or what? Check out the up-to-here slit in that dress! She and Brad Pitt attended the red carpet premiere of "Inglourious Basterds" at Cannes on May 20, 2009.

Director Quentin Tarantino’s take on World War II stars Brad Pitt as a U.S. army lieutenant leading a group of soldiers operating behind Nazi lines. The movie arrives in theaters August 21, 2009. Check out the trailer here.

Inglourious Basterds – New footage shown on American Idol

Well, it all makes sense to me now. When I heard that Quentin Tarantino was the guest mentor on "American Idol" this week, I went, what the…? But of course, it was all designed to publicize new footage from his upcoming film "Inglourious Basterds," in theaters Aug. 21, 2009.

The clip shows some behind-the-scenes stuff, followed by a montage featuring Brad Pitt and our first look at Mike Myers in character. Pitt plays Lt. Aldo Raine, who’s in charge of eight Jewish-American soldiers tasked with invading France and killing Nazis occupying the area. I haven’t been that excited about this movie, but this clip looks pretty cool!
