"Sopranos" Creator to Helm Feature Film

May 8, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

davidchase-nc The Sopranos team is moving on (sigh). James Gandolfini has signed for the BBC Film In the Loop. Edie Falco is doing a Showtime pilot. And now David Chase, creator of “The Sopranos,” has signed with Paramount Pictures to write, direct and produce his first feature film, an original drama.

Of course, there’s a connection (and not a mob connection…I don’t think anyway). Chase has a long-time relationship with Paramount Studios chairman Brad Grey, who was also his producing partner on “The Sopranos.”

“David is one of the great storytellers of our time, and his debut as a filmmaker is both highly anticipated and long overdue,” said Grey in a Paramount statement. “In truth, David has been creating cinematic-quality filmed drama for more than a decade — spanning nine seasons and 86 episodes of ‘The Sopranos.’ Having worked with David as a producer, I’m delighted to be with him again and to bring his unique vision to the big screen.”

It’s really true. The Sopranos is definitely feature-film quality stuff, and who knows, maybe we’ll see those folks again on the big screen sometime.
