Scribes in Talks for "Goosebumps" - Will it Rival "Harry Potter"?

by Jane Boursaw on August 18th, 2008

goosebumpscover R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” series is headed for the big screen, and the project is close to adding writers.

Writing duo Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander are in talks to write the live-action big-screen adaptation of the children’s horror series for Columbia Pictures. They’re expected to close the deal this week.

While straight-to-video versions of the series have been made, this will be the first feature film adaptation and could become a franchise. My kids never got into the books, but I know they’re hugely popular. I wonder if they could ever rival Harry Potter, or even come close…

More after the jump…

Producer Neal Moritz says he’ll likely cast youngsters for the leads (you almost have to, if it turns into a franchise that goes for years) and well-known actors in supporting roles, a la the “Potter” films.

The series includes more than 50 books that hark back to classic sci-fi/horror movies such as Night of the Living Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as well as the twisty-turny endings of The Twilight Zone.

Karaszewski and Alexander have the chops to do it, too. They’ve penned Ed Wood, Man on the Moon, and The People vs. Larry Flynt, which earned them a Golden Globe.
