Ridley Scott’s "Nottingham" on Hold

July 26, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

I love Russell Crowe in just about everything he does, but he’s going to have a tough time coming anywhere near Alan Rickman’s Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, with Kevin Costner in the title role. Nobody plays the bad guy like Rickman — though, admittedly, if anyone could do it, it would be Crowe.

Crowe is taking on the role in the upcoming feature film Nottingham, Ridley Scott’s take on the Robin Hood story. But he’ll have to wait a bit, because the film’s been put on hold.

Scheduled for a mid-August start date in London, plans are in a holding pattern. No word on why, though you have to wonder if the current stand-off between producers and SAG — and an impending actor’s strike — has anything to do with it.

The film re-teams Scott with Crowe — they worked together on Gladiator and the upcoming Body of Lies. Sienna Miller was recently cast as Maid Marion. No official word on who will play Robin Hood, but Sam Riley has been rumored to play the do-gooder. William Hurt and Vanessa Redgrave are also rumored to be in the film.

Nottingham was on track for a Nov. 6, 2009 release date, which would put it at the beginning of the holiday movie season.

Interesting. Loved Crowe and Scott together in Gladiator. Not sure how the story will play out from the sheriff’s point of view though. Should be high-action though.
