Ready for a good romantic comedy? Try ‘Leap Year’ with Amy Adams

December 9, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

It’s really hard to make a good romantic comedy these days. Most all of them follow much the same format – guy or girl falls for someone they’re not “supposed” to fall for, realizes they’re “the one,” then figure out how to make it work. It really boils down to the actors involved and what sort of chemistry they have.

leap_year_posterLeap Year” looks good in that department. It stars Amy Adams as Anna, a woman who decides to propose to her boyfriend, Jeremy (Adam Scott) in the Irish tradition on February 29th. So she follows him to Dublin to pop the question.

But when circumstances involving airplanes, weather and fate leave Anna stranded on the other side of Ireland, she has to enlist the help of handsome and surly Declan (Matthew Goode) to get her across the country. You guessed it – these two bickering traveling partners discover something along the way.

It’s directed by Anand Tucker, who might not be too well-known to moviegoers. He directed “Shopgirl” and “When Did You Last See Your Father?” and produced “Girl With a Pearl Earring.” The movie is rated PG for sensuality and language, and opens in theaters Jan. 8, 2010. I love Amy Adams, and it sounds like a modern-day “It Happened One Night”!
