Paramount Scores "American Teen"

January 23, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

nanette1 Some interesting deals took place at Sundance this year, as film execs schmoozed at premieres and parties in Park City. “American Teen,” Nanette Burstein’s documentary about high school seniors, was one of those deals.

Paramount Vantage is in final negotiations for worldwide rights (excluding the U.K.) to the film, with an estimated final price ranging from under $1 million to $2.5 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The A&E Indie Films production – nominated for the Grand Jury Prize – follows four Midwestern high school seniors: a cheerleader, a hipster, a jock and a band geek. Vantage may partner with its sister outlet MTV to market the film to their audience.

As one of the only narrative-driven documentaries and one of the few films causing a stir on opening weekend, “Teen” quickly became a hot commodity, with Vantage, Fox Searchlight, and Sony Pictures Classics entering into the fray.
