Actors are under so much pressure all the time from the media that it's no surprise someone would crack like this. They need to back off and give him time to heal and recover, both physically and emotionally. Not only are the media one of the reason Owen would have done this, but they are perpetuating and aggravating the situation by suffocating him in order to make a cheap buck. After all, he's just an ordinary guy like you and me. Cut the guy some slack, back off and give him time to recover.
