Movie Preview and Trailer: "Teeth"

Well, somebody finally did it – we’ve got a horror flick about a woman who has killer teeth in her vagina.   Hold on while I finish laughing, I can barely see through my tears. 

"Teeth" is about a high school girl, Dawn (Jess Weixler) who is the most active participant in her local chastity group, has a perverted stepbrother and vagina dentata (toothed vagina).  Basically, she becomes the living version of an age old myth that’s been used to try to keep young adults from engaging in premarity sex.  The premise is interesting, I’ll give it that.  I’m also wondering whether they are going to put some sort of "this is what happens when you use nuclear power" spin on it because, in the trailer, she bikes past a glowing power plant.  Just a side thought…

This seems like a black comedy/drama to me and reminds me of "Ginger Snaps" in the sense that it’s about female empowerment – each contains a protagonist who is a teenaged girl with some sort of mutation (whether it be a toothed vagina or by being a werewolf) that they ultimately use as a weapon. 

So far, the overall reception has been positive for this film and it was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize but won the Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival for Jess Weixler’s "for a juicy and jaw-dropping performance.”
