Mel Gibson to Star in "Edge of Darkness"

April 29, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

image Mel Gibson has signed on for “Edge of Darkness,” his first starring role in a feature film since headlining Signs and We Were Soldiers in 2002, reports Variety.

Martin Campbell, who also helmed Casino Royale and GoldenEye, will direct the movie, based on the six-hour 1985 BBC miniseries, which Campbell also directed. Filming is set to begin in Boston in August.

Gibson will play a straitlaced cop who who investigates a corrupt system that led to his activist daughter’s death.

Most recently, Gibson directed 2004’s The Passion of the Christ and 2006’s Apocalypto.

Has the furor over his bad behavior in recent years died down enough to get back in our good graces? Time will tell. I often get nostalgic for the pre-wackiness era of talented actors like Gibson and Tom Cruise, but think the craziness of Hollywood would be enough to send anyone over the edge.
