"Inglourious Basterds" Gets a Release Date

January 3, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

quentin-tarantino-grindhouse I always have trouble writing "Inglourious Basterds," because I just want to fix the typos. But I can’t, because that’s the official movie title. Anyway, the movie has a release date: Aug. 21, 2009.

Director Quentin Tarantino’s take on World War II stars Brad Pitt as a U.S. army lieutenant leading a group of soldiers operating behind Nazi lines. We’re certainly getting a lot of wars movies lately, aren’t we? "Valkyrie" "Defiance," and "Good," to name three.

Word has it that "Inglourious Basterds" takes a page from the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s and ’70s, in that it combines brutal violence and lyrical, fairytale-like qualities.

Any Tarantino fans out there? I can’t say I’ve ever been a huge fan of his work, but it’s certainly different and more violently stylish than many films. Tarantino won an Oscar for his 1994 "Pulp Fiction" script, and also made the martial arts films "Kill Bill: Vol. 1" (2003) and "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" (2004).

You kind of wonder what goes in on that head of his, something I often wonder about writer Stephen King. Who can handle all that violence and horror swirling around in their head all the time…?
