I signed up for some bad television when I married a geek, but never anticipated I’d fall in love with sci-fi. The one and only disagreement I have with my husband is around Futurama: which he finds stupidly funny, and I just find stupid.
Together we watched Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs, the second of four feature length direct-to-DVD films based on the tv show, and it wasn’t quite as bad as I was expecting. It was, to my husband, a fabulous hour-and-a-half of Futurama enjoyment. It had all the zing you expect from Matt Groening, with an outlandish plot line that is part and parcel with the show.
The movie follows the Planet Express crew as they try to fix a tear in their Universe that has allowed a tentacled alien to invade their Universe and take over their bodies and minds. Tales of love are woven in and out of the movie, as is the religion debate. Despite the absurdity of the movie, there are statements being made about religion and belief and how they can be co-opted. Yes, there is comedy. Some of it actually funny. From the alien and its polyamorous ways to a plethora of one-liner and geek-only references. For people who liked Futurama, it’s a great movie with a slightly more adult twist.
The movie has guest talent by Brittany Murphy and David Cross, aside from the regular slew of voices.
