Judd Apatow is the Energizer Bunny of Hollywood lately. Let’s take stock: He wrote and produced The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. He produced Talladega nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Superbad, Drillbit Taylor, and this movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
He’s also producing, writing and/or directing ten — TEN! — movies in the next two years, including the upcoming Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco.
In short, Whew! Does the guy ever sleep?!
Like other Apatow movies, Forgetting Sarah Marshall — directed by Nicholas Stoller and written by and starring Jason Segel — takes all those awkward real-life moments and puts a funny spin on them. A funny, sometimes outrageous spin on them.
Take the first scene…
Peter Bretter (Segel) has just been dumped by his girlfriend, CSI-type TV star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell, Heroes and Veronica Mars). Peter writes the music for Sarah’s TV show, which makes things all the more awkward.
As it happens, he’s just getting out of the shower when she dumps him. But he refuses to put any clothes on, because if he puts clothes on, that makes the break-up a done deal. So he drops the towel and stands there in all his naked glory in front of Sarah — and us! Wow, that takes some, well…you know what. Props to Segel for laying it all out there.
And that’s just what Segel does through the whole movie, crying like a baby about the breakup at one point. He ends up at the same Hawaiian resort as Sarah and her new British rock-star boyfriend, Aldous Snow (played with sleaze by Russell Brand - I’m like, excuse me? She left Peter for this dork?).
At the resort, Peter does his best to pull it together, including taking surfing lessons from Chuck (Paul Rudd), getting advice via Internet phone from his brother Brian (Bill Hader) and sister-in-law Liz (Liz Cackowski), hanging with sex-phobic newlywed Darald (Jack McBrayer, Kenneth on 30 Rock), falling in love with hotel concierge Rachel (Mila Kunis, Jackie on That 70s Show), and mixing with other hotel staff, including Matthew the waiter (Jonah Hill).
If you like other Apatow movies — rife with sex jokes, awkward moments, and quirky characters — then you’ll probably love this movie. I thought it was very funny, and I’m lukewarm on some of his movies. I loved Knocked Up, but wasn’t that crazy about Superbad.
And I’ll look forward to see what the talented Jason Segel has coming down the pike.
