"Fly Me to the Moon 3D" Review and Trailer

Fly Me to the Moon surely must be the least-publicized movie this year. I haven’t heard much about it, so didn’t know what to expect. But it’s a great G-rated movie (a rarity in this day and age) that’s appropriate for any age. It’s also CG-animated in 3D, and they make good use of it all the way through. As you might imagine, the movie lends itself well to 3D format, what with the space travel and all.

It’s the 1960’s and three young flies — Nat (Trevor Gagnon), I.Q. (Philip Bolden) and Scooter (David Gore) — lead dismal lives compared to the other flies their age. After seeing some cool NASA news, they decide to spice up their lives by tagging along on Apollo 11.

Nat’s mom (Kelly Ripa) is none too thrilled about any sort of adventure, but his grandpa (Christopher Lloyd) loves telling stories about his past escapades. It’s just the encouragement Nat and his friends need, so they make their way to NASA and hop aboard the space shuttle headed for the moon. Good thing, too, because their presence comes in handy during the flight.

Boasting additional voices of Tim Curry, Robert Patrick, Nicollette Sheridan, Ed Begley, Jr. and Adrienne Barbeau (Yes, Adrienne Barbeau!), this movie is a fun look back at the space program as seen through the eyes of a humble fly.

As mentioned, the 3D animation is great, with all sorts of things flying off the screen at you. And here’s a sentence I thought I’d never write: The little maggots — Nat’s little brothers and sisters — are cute as the dickens.

It’s no Finding Nemo, but this is still a really cute movie with a message about working together and following your dreams.

NOTE TO PARENTS: It’s rated G, so there’s nothing too offensive here. Grandpa flirts with an old love, and the local TV station’s call letters are D-CUP (what the heck?!). Violence consists of some mild scuffles between Russian and American flies. Language is limited to “butt” and mild insults like “idiot” and “stupid.” Nat’s mom yells “Lord of the flies!” as a phrase of exclamation a few times.
