Though Ebert’s surgery in July, 2006 made it impossible for him to appear on the air, he continued to work behind the scenes and cheer on guest hosts, including Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott.
“Gene and I felt the formula was simplicity itself: Two film critics, sitting across the aisle from each other in a movie balcony, debating the new films of the week,” writes Ebert. “We developed an entirely new concept for TV. Few shows have been on the air so long and remained so popular. We made television history, and established the trademarked catch-phrase “Two thumbs up.”
In fact, the trademark still belongs to Ebert and Marlene Iglitzen, Gene’s widow. He writes that they’re discussion possibilities and plan to continue the show’s tradition.
I used to watch the show back in the 70’s when it was on PBS as “Sneak Previews.” I’ll look forward to seeing what they come up with.
