Catherine Zeta-Jones in for "Cleo"

October 23, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

catherinezetajones1 Catherine Zeta-Jones gets to sing and dance again! She knocked audiences out (and won an Oscar) with her turn as the scheming Velma Kelly in Rob Marshall’s “Chicago.” But what impressed me most was her singing at the Academy Awards when she was, like, 10 months pregnant.

Now she’s set to star in “Cleo,” a period musical directed by Steven Soderbergh. It’s a retelling of the story of Antony and Cleopatra set in the 1920s. Hugh Jackman — who’s a great song-and-dance man — is in talks to star, as well.

They had me with the song and dance stuff, but I’m having trouble visualizing Cleopatra in the 1920s. Can’t quite wrap the brain around that one, maybe because Elizabeth Taylor cast such a large shadow as the legendary figure in the 1963 movie. But I’ll hold judgment until I hear more about it.

Soderbergh is currently shooting “The Girlfriend Experience” for 2929 as part of a six-picture deal with the company. He’s also developing a Liberace biopic with Michael Douglas attached to star. Now THAT I can picture!
