Kate Hudson directed this short film called "Cutlass," about a woman who remembers what it’s like to want something really, really badly. The excellent cast includes Dakota Fanning, Virginia Madsen, Kurt Russell, Kristen Stewart, Chevy Chase and Sarah Roemer.
This little film is fantastic, and I think Kate Hudson has a nice directing career ahead of her. It’s only 16 minutes long, and is playing at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival.

"The Confession" is an offbeat short comedy about a young man who goes to confession, only to receive some … not-so-spiritual advice. The Irish film is directed, written and produced by Thomas Hefferon, and is an official selection of the 2009 "Tribeca Film Festival." Be sure and watch through to the end – it’s only 3 minutes and 44 seconds long.

From time to time, I’ll highlight here on Film Gecko some of the cool places to watch free movies online – and shine the spotlight on some of those cool movies.
One of my favorite places is the YouTube Screening Room, where you’ll find all sorts of films, from “The 13th Amendment,” about a 90-year-old woman who casts her first-ever vote for an African-American President, to “Slacker – The Film,” Richard Linklater’s indie classic about a group of social outcasts living out their lives in Austin, Texas.

One of my current favorites is “Yellow Sticky Notes” by director Jeff Chiba Stearns. After realizing that his life was consumed by yellow sticky notes filled with endless “to do” lists (right there with ya, buddy), Stearns decided to make a film about it. So he animated 2,300 of those same sticky notes, blending hand-drawn images with an original score by Genevieve Vincent. The film made the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival.

Look for “Yellow Sticky Notes” on the YouTube Screening Room, and check out the other great films there, too. The site adds new movies every two weeks!

For more on “Yellow Sticky Notes” and Jeff Chiba Stearns:

The last time I saw Mariah Carey in a movie was just recently, in You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. I hated the movie, and she did nothing to elevate it in my mind.

More after the jump…

It’s a quiet, moody drama centering on two lower-middle class brothers (Adam Rothenberg and Ethan Peck) who take to the road to resolve their economic and health challenges. Along the way they meet and bring along a waitress (Carey) whose dreams of a singing career have been dashed by a bad marriage.

It’s not a musical, but Carey performs the original ballad “Right to Dream,” which she co-wrote with Willie Nelson. The movie opens in theaters this December.
