Bond’s Aston Martin Crashes Into Lake

quantum1 A stunt man working on the latest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, accidentally drove 007’s prized car into an Italian lake Sunday.

The Aston Martin DBS was totaled at dawn (how fitting) during heavy rain alongside northern Italy’s Lake Garda, with the car veering off the road and plunging 30 feet into the water.

“The car skidded, broke through the guard rail and ended up in the water,” a local told reporters. “It floated almost a minute and then went straight down.”

Valued at $250,000, the car sank about 150 feet and was later pulled out by a crane. The roof was crushed almost flat into the bodywork, but the driver was able to swim ashore. Identified as Fraser Dunn, 30, the driver was taken to the nearby Rovereto Hospital and diagnosed with a thorax trauma.

“Let’s put it this way, Bond or no Bond, that car isn’t going anywhere but the mechanic, and for quite some time too,” the source told People.com. “The front of the car was heavily damaged by the impact with the metal guard rail and the right hand side of the car looked like it had been grated against a wall. When it came out of the water, hooked up to the crane, it looked like one giant black wet sock. Water kept pouring out of it.”

Although it’s not noted in the People story, other sources say the Aston Martin’s wheels were not properly installed after shipping to the location. The Quantum of Solace crew has been at the lake for the past week and the filming had gone smoothly — up until now, that is.

Franceschino Risatti, the mayor of Limone, told reporters: “The first 11 minutes of the film are filmed here in our area. The filming involves a breathtaking car chase through Limone, Tremosine and Malcesine. We are very lucky to have this taking place here. The whole world will get to know our towns!”
