"American Violet" – Preview & Trailer

February 13, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Think your life sucks? Consider the dilemma of Dee Roberts, a 24-year-old African-American single mom in Texas who was wrongfully caught up in the midst of a drug raid. This looks like a movie that will have me completely grateful for being born in the right place at the right time. Because as Katharine Hepburn once said, sometimes it’s all about luck, and like her, I’ve been "damn lucky."

"American Violet" is the true story of Roberts, played by Nicole Beharie, who decided to fight the system, including the powerful district attorney (Michael O’Keefe) who wanted to take her down. Going against the wishes of her mom (Alfre Woodard), Roberts risks it all — including losing her children — but gets some help from an ACLU attorney (Tim Blake Nelson) and a former narcotics officer (Will Patton). Will the system win?

Directed by Tim Disney, "American Violet" is due in theaters April 17, 2009. Visit the official site, and watch the trailer:
